What It Takes to Show Up on Google in Central Texas: Our 2026 Local Search Study
We ran 34 Google searches from 11 Central Texas towns and recorded who showed up. Google showed its map on 27 of them. The typical business in the map had 28 reviews, and every one was rated 4.8 stars or higher. Half of the regular results were pages written about that exact town.
No contract. No exit fee. Your domain and Google accounts stay in your name.

Every local business owner asks the same question sooner or later: what does it actually take to show up when someone nearby searches for what I sell? Most answers online are guesses, or national averages that don’t fit a town like Hutto or Bee Cave.
So we checked. We searched Google from 11 towns across Central Texas, the way a customer standing in each town would, and wrote down everything on the first page. Here is what we found, town by town, and what it means for your business.
How did we run the study?
We used DataForSEO, a service that returns Google results exactly as they appear from a chosen location. For each town, we set the location to that town and ran four searches a customer might type when looking for marketing help:
- “seo company” plus the town name
- “best seo company” plus the town name
- “web design” plus the town name
- “google ads” plus the town name
That gave us 34 searches across Austin, Bee Cave, Brushy Creek, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Hutto, Leander, Pflugerville, Round Rock, San Marcos and West Lake Hills. To compare, we ran 8 more in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth.
For every search we recorded the top 10 results, the three businesses in Google’s map with their star ratings and review counts, whether Google showed an AI answer at the top, and the “People also ask” questions. All searches ran on the same day in September 2026, on desktop, in English.
How often does Google show the map?
Most of the time. Google showed its map of three local businesses on 27 of the 34 searches. But it depended heavily on what people typed:
| What people searched | Searches | Map shown | AI answer shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| seo company + town | 11 | 11 | 1 |
| best seo company + town | 11 | 10 | 4 |
| web design + town | 6 | 6 | 0 |
| google ads + town | 6 | 0 | 6 |
The surprise was Google Ads. Not one of those searches showed a map, and every one of them opened with an AI answer instead. For services people see as local, like an SEO company or a web designer, the map was almost always there.
How many Google reviews do you need to get into the map?
Across all 11 towns, the typical business in the map had 28 reviews. The business in the top spot also had 28. In the four big cities, the typical business in the map had 59, about twice as many.
The number changed a lot from town to town:
| Town | Map spots checked | Typical reviews | Fewest reviews | Spots with under 10 reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pflugerville | 6 | 45 | 25 | 0 |
| Bee Cave | 6 | 40 | 2 | 1 |
| Cedar Park | 9 | 38 | 1 | 1 |
| Austin | 9 | 37 | 20 | 0 |
| West Lake Hills | 6 | 30 | 5 | 2 |
| Leander | 9 | 29 | 4 | 3 |
| Round Rock | 6 | 26 | 16 | 0 |
| Brushy Creek | 6 | 26 | 16 | 0 |
| San Marcos | 9 | 18 | 8 | 2 |
| Hutto | 9 | 17 | 3 | 3 |
| Georgetown | 6 | 14 | 5 | 3 |
In Georgetown, Hutto and Leander, three of the map spots in each town went to businesses with fewer than 10 reviews. In a smaller town, a business that gets a steady handful of reviews can reach the map far sooner than it could in a big city. In Houston, the typical business in the map had 97 reviews.

Does your star rating matter?
It gets you in the door, but it doesn’t pick the winner. All 81 map spots in Central Texas went to businesses rated between 4.8 and 5.0 stars. When everyone has nearly perfect stars, the stars stop telling customers, or Google, much.
What separated them was the number of reviews, how recent they were, and how closely the business matched the search. A 4.9 with 40 fresh reviews beats a 5.0 with six old ones.
Is the map really local?
Less than you might think. The 81 map spots in Central Texas went to just 38 different businesses. One business appeared in the map in 8 of the 11 towns. Two more appeared in three towns each.
Google says it ranks local results on three things: how relevant a business is, how far it is from the searcher, and how well known it is. Distance matters, but a business with lots of reviews and pages about each town it serves can reach well past its own city limits. Here is how Google picks who shows up in the map, and what you can change.
What fills the rest of page one?
Below the map, we looked at 307 regular results. They fell into three groups:
- 52% were pages about that exact town, like a business’s “Georgetown SEO company” page. Google clearly rewards a page written for the place the customer is searching from.
- 33% were directories, lists and social sites, such as Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Clutch, Semrush’s agency lists, Facebook and LinkedIn.
- 15% were other business pages, mostly homepages and service pages that didn’t mention the town.
Directories took at least 3 of the top 10 spots on 21 of the 34 searches. If your business isn’t listed on the directories that show up for your trade, you are missing a big share of page one, even when your own website ranks.
How often does Google’s AI answer first?
Across all 45 searches, including the big cities, Google showed an AI answer at the top of 14. It depended on the words people used. Searches with “best” in them were more likely to get one, and every “google ads” search in Central Texas got one.
Those AI answers pull from the same websites, reviews and directory listings as the regular results. Here is how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google’s AI.
What do people ask Google about SEO?
Google’s “People also ask” box showed the same few questions again and again. The most common, and how many of the 45 searches showed each one:
- “Is SEO still worth it in 2026?”: 24 searches
- “How much does it cost to hire someone to do SEO?”: 16 searches
- “What does an SEO company do?”: 13 searches
- “What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?”: 8 searches
Owners want to know if it’s worth the money before they talk to anyone. We answer two of those in how much SEO costs and what an SEO company does.
What does this mean for your business?
If you serve customers in Central Texas, the study points to five things worth doing, in this order:
- Get past the typical review count for your town. Around 30 reviews puts you level with the typical business in the map here. In Georgetown, Hutto or Leander, fewer can be enough.
- Keep reviews coming every month. With everyone rated 4.8 or higher, fresh reviews are what set you apart.
- Build one strong page for each town you really serve. Half of page one was pages about the town being searched.
- Claim the directories that show up for your trade. Search your main service in your town and list yourself on every directory you see on page one.
- Make sure the AI answers can find you. The same reviews, pages and listings feed them.
