01 Track record

Who is looking at your site

The first pass is done by the person who will do the work, using data you already own, and you get the finding in writing either way.

What you get first

A cause, with the evidence

Not a retainer proposal. The date it started, what changed on that date, what a fix involves, and an honest read on what recovers and what has to be rebuilt.

If it turns out to be a five minute fix you can make yourself, we will tell you exactly what to change.

02 The challenge

What usually caused it

Four causes account for nearly every collapse we look at, and each one leaves a date behind in data you already own.

A redesign with no redirects

The most common of all. Every address changed, so years of authority now point at pages that return nothing. Fixable, and the sooner the more comes back.

Telling Google to go away

A staging site pushed live with its noindex tag attached, or a robots rule blocking everything. One line, total disappearance, unnoticed for months.

A hack you cannot see

Spam pages in a corner of the site, or redirects that fire only for Google and only on mobile. It looks normal to you while it is being penalised.

It simply got slower

A plugin, a tracking script, a gallery, or a host oversubscribed since you signed up. Nothing broke. You just fell behind the competition.

03 How we work

What happens when you call

We find the date the traffic changed, then find what changed on that date. Most of the answer is already sitting in data you own.

  1. Pin the date

A cliff on one day means something you, your developer or your host did. A slow slide means an update, or competitors doing the work you stopped doing. Different shapes, different conclusions.

  2. Check Google can see it

Index coverage, the live URL test, the raw robots file and any stray noindex tag. First thing we look at, and the cause more often than anyone expects.

  3. Check the addresses

The old URL set crawled against the new site, counting what lands on a 404 or gets dumped on the homepage, then mapped to the pages that replaced them.

  4. Check hack and host

Injected pages, cloaked redirects, expired certificates, a server timing out for weeks. Search Console security issues plus a crawl as a search engine usually surfaces it in an hour.

  5. Tell you, in writing

The cause, the evidence, what a fix involves, and an honest read on what recovers. If it is a five minute fix you can do yourself, we say exactly that.

04 The audit

The first pass, in full

Fourteen checks, ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer rather than by how interesting it is.

The technical checklist

Most of it runs against data you already own, which is why the first look takes hours rather than days.

  • The exact date traffic changed, Search Console and Analytics side by side
  • Index coverage: pages held now against pages held before
  • robots.txt rules blocking the site, a directory, or an asset the pages need
  • noindex tags left behind by a staging site or a plugin
  • Canonical tags pointing at the wrong page or another domain
  • The old URL set crawled against the new one, counting 404s and redirect chains
  • Redirects dumping everything on the homepage instead of the replacement
  • Security issues and manual actions in Search Console
  • A crawl with a search engine user agent, to catch cloaked spam
  • Server response codes, uptime history and certificate expiry
  • Core Web Vitals and mobile usability before and after the drop
  • Branded against non-branded traffic, split rather than merged
  • Which pages lost, and what occupies their positions now
  • Whether the date matches a known Google update or lands somewhere else

05 Straight answers

What comes back, and what does not

Technical damage usually recovers fully once the cause is removed, and often within days to a few weeks. Redirect damage recovers as the redirects are found and followed. Hack damage recovers once the spam is gone and the review is accepted.

What does not switch back on is authority that moved elsewhere. If competitors spent a year earning your positions, that is a rebuild rather than a repair, and we will tell you which of the two you are in before you pay for anything.

What clients say after the diagnosis

Google reviews of Visible Owl, all five stars. The first describes exactly the situation this page is written for: spend going out, leads inconsistent, nobody able to explain why.

Rated 5 out of 5

We were honestly at the point where we didn't know what was working anymore, our business is located in Round Rock, TX. We were paying for Google Ads, had someone doing SEO before, and our website looked decent, but the leads were inconsistent and nobody could really explain why. Visible Owl went through everything instead of treating each thing separately. Website, tracking, Google Ads, local SEO, Google Business Profile, landing pages, all of it.

Very professional team, results oriented, and deeply experienced in the Dental Market. We had a great success working with Visible Owl team, and our SEO ranking significantly improved and the google ranking as well. We are so grateful for the work they have done so far to improve our website and Google Business Profile.

What recovery costs

The first look is a fixed piece of work and you get the written finding whether or not you continue. What follows depends entirely on what we find, and you get that number before anything starts.

The range is genuinely wide. Restoring a missing redirect map on a fifty page site is an afternoon. Cleaning a hacked site and getting a manual action lifted is a week. Rebuilding authority lost over eighteen months is a programme of work, and we would rather you knew that first.

Call while the evidence is still fresh

Search Console keeps sixteen months of data, hosting logs often far less, and a hacked site gets harder to clean the longer it sits.

Read access to Search Console and Analytics is enough for the first pass, and it takes a few hours. You get the finding in writing regardless of whether you hire us to fix it. We are based in Round Rock, so if you are local we can look at it in person: see digital marketing in Round Rock.

09 Common questions

Traffic drop and recovery questions, answered straight

My website traffic dropped suddenly. What is the most likely cause?

Something changed on the site or the server on that specific day. In the order we usually find them: a redesign or migration without redirects, a noindex tag or robots.txt rule left in place, a hack, and a hosting or certificate failure.

A drop that lands on one date is almost never a Google update. Updates roll out over days and hit some pages harder than others, which shows up as an uneven slide rather than a cliff. That difference is the first thing we check because it changes the entire diagnosis.

We rebuilt our website and the traffic disappeared. Can it be fixed?

Usually, yes, and the sooner the better. The most common version is that every page address changed and no redirects were put in place, so all the authority those old pages earned now points at nothing.

The fix is a redirect map: every old address matched to the page that replaced it with a 301 redirect, then a recrawl request. Recovery usually starts within a few weeks. What makes it harder is time, because links pointing at dead pages get dropped and competitors settle into the positions in the meantime.

How fast can you look at my site?

Call and you will usually get an answer the same day. The first pass takes a few hours, because most of it is reading Search Console and Analytics data you already own rather than waiting on a crawl.

You get the finding in writing whether or not you hire us for the fix. If it is something you or your developer can correct in an afternoon, we will tell you exactly what to change.

Do you fix hacked websites?

We find the damage, clean what is on the site, get the spam pages removed from the index, close the hole that allowed it and file the security review with Google. If the hosting account itself is compromised, we will tell you plainly that your host has to be part of the fix.

We do not take on incident response for businesses handling card data or health records. That needs a specialist with the right obligations, and we will say so rather than take the work.

Can you recover rankings after a Google update?

Sometimes, and honestly not always. An update that reassessed the quality or usefulness of your content is not a bug to be patched. It is a judgement, and the answer to it is better pages rather than a technical fix.

What we can do is show you exactly which pages lost, what the pages that replaced them are doing differently, and what it would take to compete. Then you decide whether that work is worth doing, which is a business decision rather than an SEO one.

How do I know if my site has been deindexed?

Search Google for site: followed by your domain, with no space. If almost nothing comes back, the site is not in the index. Search Console's index coverage report will tell you the same thing with the reason attached, which is the more useful version.

The usual causes are a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, or a manual action listed under Security and Manual Actions in Search Console. All three are visible in an account you already own, and all three are fixable once you know which one you have.

Will you need access to my hosting?

For the first look, no. Read access to Google Search Console and Google Analytics is enough to find most causes, and we can crawl the public site without touching anything.

Fixing usually does need hosting or CMS access, or your developer working from our findings. Either is fine. If you would rather your existing developer did the work, take the written finding to them.

My rankings dropped but my traffic looks fine. What is happening?

Often the searches you rank for changed rather than your position. A page can hold its position while the volume behind that phrase collapses, or Google can start answering the question directly at the top of the results so fewer people click through.

The other common version is that branded searches are propping up the total while non-branded traffic falls, which means new customers are no longer finding you and existing ones are. Splitting those two apart is one of the first things we do, and it is the report line most agencies quietly leave merged.

Can you help if another agency built the site?

Yes, and most recovery work arrives that way. We are not interested in blaming whoever built it, and quite often the previous developer did nothing wrong at all, since a hosting failure or an accidental staging deployment is nobody's idea of a plan.

What we need is access and honesty about what changed and when. If your current developer wants to be in the conversation, that is usually the fastest route to a fix.
